Ryan Building Materials began in 1921, but not as the building materials supplier it is known as today. In 1921, brothers Francis and Joseph Ryan began Ryan Brothers Coal Company at 13th and Northwestern. Ryan Brothers Coal Company was located along the railroad spur that allowed easy coal delivery to the business. Coal was a necessity in this time, and Ryan Brothers Coal Company supplied this major energy source for homes, businesses, and schools. Francis Ryan’s son, John F. Ryan, joined the business in the early 1940’s, and eventually John’s son, Art Ryan, joined the company in 1958.
As the primary energy source became natural gas, the company adapted to that change and Ryan Brothers Coal Company evolved into Ryan Building Materials. Art Ryan’s sons, Kevin and David Ryan, son-in-law Mike Ferguson, and wife Susan Ryan joined the company and today continue supplying building and masonry materials to construction companies and individuals. Ryan Building Materials has built strong ties with local businesses for over fifty years as a premier construction supplier to Kansas City and the surrounding area.
